What Are Bed Bugs?

Bedbugs are brown insects with flattened bodies. They’re only a few millimeters long. And they feed on the blood of humans and animals.

Though the insects do not stay on humans for long periods like fleas or mosquitoes, they can cause significant irritation by leaving itchy red welts. Bedbugs are most active at night, but they are not exclusively nocturnal.

Bed bug bites can be extremely itchy and uncomfortable and result in psychological effects and allergic reactions, though they are not known to transmit diseases.

Where Are Bed Bugs Found?

The first step in getting rid of bed bugs is identifying where they are hiding. Look for them in the following places:

  • Mattresses
  • Box springs
  • Headboards
  • Bed Frames

They can also be found in many hiding places during the day, including in baseboards, bed frames, cracks in furniture, behind wallpaper, and under carpeting.

And You Would Not Believe This!

Not only are bed bugs found in our beds and our baby’s cribs, but believe it or not, they are commonly found in public libraries, public institutions, retail stores, movie theaters and medical facilities.

How Did I Get Bedbugs?

You can also find bed bugs in other people’s sleeping places, such as hotels, motels, nursing homes, or shelters.

Bedbugs often hitch a ride in luggage, furniture, clothing, or used items. You might have unknowingly brought them into your home from another location. Or, someone else who visited your home could unknowingly bring them in.

How Do You Know If You Have Bed Bugs?

The best way to know if you have bed bugs is to look for the signs of an infestation. These bed bug infestation signs include:

  • Tiny brown or red streaks on your sheets or pillows
  • Blood stains on your sheets or clothing
  • Fecal matter on your sheets or mattress seams
  • Shed skin casings around your bed
  • A musty smell in your bedroom

You must act as quickly as possible if you notice any of these signs. One bed bug can lay up to 500 eggs in its lifetime. So the longer you wait, the more stressful and difficult it will be to eliminate them.
